Artist Statement

Inspired by bright colors and fun patterns, I bring an exuberant spirit to utilitarian and decorative ceramics. Working with white and red clay, multiple glazes, firing in oxidation and reduction, and using a plethora of tools, each piece of pottery I create is unique and not one is the same! I love experimenting with new techniques, so my pottery ranges from simple white mugs to intricately carved vases, to sgraffito and slip-trailed cups, to drippy bowls and charcuterie boards. My forms are modern, classic, traditional, and playful, and are always changing; once I finish one idea, it’s off to the next!

Bio

Born and raised in Des Moines, Iowa, I first got my hands muddy in my sophomore year of high school! I spent 3 years throwing pots at school and the Des Moines Art, refining my skills and craft. I completed the IB Art Program, a 2-year rigorous program designed to hone and define young artist’s skill, which is where I began experimenting with sculpture and concept-driven work. I also earned 2 Gold Keys for individual works and 1 Gold Key for a portfolio from the Scholastic Art and Writing Competition and was chosen to be a part of the All-State Iowa Art team in 2019.
After graduating, I moved to Burlington, Vermont to attend the University of Vermont, where I am currently in my junior year, working towards a dual degree with a B.A. in Art History, a B.S. in Anthropology, and a minor in Environmental Studies. For my freshman year work-study job, I worked at the university’s pottery co-op as a clay tech. It was pretty-short lived since the pandemic began. After not touching clay for a year and a half, I started my new job at Burlington City Arts as a Teaching Assistant and Studio Assistant, and now have worked my way up to Pottery Instructor! I spend all the free time I have working with my favorite medium and producing fun, unique, and exciting new pottery!
